Known as the XIX Olympic Winter Games, the competitions were held in and around Salt Lake City in the month of February 2002. They continued the traditional sporting event which debuted 80 years earlier in
Chamonix, France and included events like alpine skiing, figure skating, ice hockey and speed skating.
The US Mint also created an uncirculated version of this gold coin.
2002 Olympic Coins
A total of four different coins were released by the US Mint in 2002 to celebrate the Winter Olympic Games held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Those four coins were:

- 2002-P Olympic Winter Games Commemorative Proof Silver Dollar

Surcharges were added to the sale of each coin. Proceeds raised were forwarded to the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 and the United States Olympic Committee.
Issue Information
Each Olympic Gold Coin is struck from 90% gold to the diameter of 0.850 inches.
Release Date
The US Mint released the Olympic Gold Coin in late 2001.

Initial price on the Olympic Coin was $195.00.
U.S. Mint Production Facility
A ‘W’ mintmark on each gold coin indicates it was struck at the US Mint’s facility in West Point.
Designer & Sculptor
Donna Weaver designed both the obverse (heads side) and reverse (tails side) of the Olympic Gold Coins. The obverse shows the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games Crystal Emblem superimposed over the 2002 Olympics other emblem the "Rhythm of the Land." The reverse shows the Olympic flame atop a cauldron.
