2003-P First Flight Commemorative Uncirculated Silver Dollar

The United States Mint released several coins in 2003 relating to the Wright Brothers successful flight a century earlier, one of which was the 2003-P First Flight Commemorative Uncirculated Silver Dollar.

Orville and Wilbur Wright were brothers, businessmen and inventors who, along with many others, searched for a way for man to obtain powered controllable flight. On December 17, 1903, the two succeeded and are credited with being the first to obtain such a feat.

A proof version of this Silver Dollar was also struck by the US Mint.

2003 First Flight Coins

The United States Mint released six different Wright Brothers First Flight Coins in 2003 including the following strikes:

The First Flight Centennial Foundation was selected as the recipient of surcharges raised by the sale of each First Flight Coin. The Foundation was to use the funds for the Wright Monument on the Outer Banks in North Carolina and the Wright Brothers’ National Memorial Park.

Issue Information

Struck from 90% silver, each First Flight Silver Dollar has a diameter of 1.5 inches.

Release Date

The US Mint released the Uncirculated First Flight Coin on August 1, 2003.

Issue Price

The initial price charged for the First Flight Uncirculated Coin was $31.00.

U.S. Mint Production Facility

Each First Flight Silver Dollar was struck at the US Mint’s facility in Philadelphia and show the ‘P’ mintmark.

Designer / Sculptor / Engraver

The obverse (heads side) of the First Flight Silver Dollar was designed by T. James Ferrell and shows a profile of the two Wright brothers – Orville and Wilbur.

The reverse (tails side) shows the Wright 1903 flyer in the air above the sand banks at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and was designed by Norman E. Nemeth.
