Following a decision by the United States Supreme Court a couple of years earlier determining that segregated schools were unconstitutional, these nine students were the first to attempt to enroll at a previously all-white school in Little Rock. That intention to attend the school was met with resistance and forced the President of the United States to send an armed escort from the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army to protect the students.

Each of these coins is struck from 90% silver and 10% copper to a diameter of 1.5 inches

U.S. Mint Production Facility

The Silver Little Rock Coins were struck at the US Mint’s facility in Philadelphia and feature the ‘P’ mintmark.

Designer & Sculptor

The obverse (heads side) of the Silver Little Rock Coin depicts the feet of the nine African-American students who attended Little Rock Central High School in 1957 along with the feet of a soldier escorting them. It was designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Charles Vickers

Designed and sculpted by Don Everhart, the reverse (tails side) shows the Little Rock Central High School as it appeared in 1957.
