Atypical for the series, this coin does not actually honor a person. This is because Thomas Jefferson (the third President of the United States) was a widower of nineteen years when he assumed the office of President. The authorizing legislation for the series dictates that in an instance like this, the mythical figure of Liberty be used instead.
Each First Spouse Gold Coin is struck from 1/2 ounce of 24-karat gold to either proof or uncirculated condition.
Additional 2007 First Spouse Gold Coins
A total of four coins were issued in the First Spouse Gold Coin series in 2007. The coins included:
- 2007-W Martha Washington First Spouse Gold Coin
- 2007-W Abigail Adams First Spouse Gold Coin
- 2007-W Jefferson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin
- 2007-W Dolley Madison First Spouse Gold Coin
Typically four coins are issued per year. However, if a president had two spouses while in office, both will be honored on separate coins resulting in some years with more than four coins issued in the series.
