Martha was the wife of the first President of the United States, George Washington, and as such she was the first person honored in the new program. Subsequent coins in the series were and are released at an approximate rate of four per year in the order upon which the associated President served.

Each coin in the series is struck from 1/2 ounce of 24-karat gold to either proof or uncirculated condition.

Additional 2007 First Spouse Gold Coins

The debut year for the First Spouse Gold Coin Program saw a total of four strikes released under it. These included:

  • 2007-W Martha Washington First Spouse Gold Coin
  • 2007-W Abigail Adams First Spouse Gold Coin
  • 2007-W Jefferson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin
  • 2007-W Dolley Madison First Spouse Gold Coin

Applicable for coins associated with Presidents who were not married at the time of their administration – the authorizing legislation for the coins dictates that an image of Liberty be used where the spouse would normally be featured. An example of this is the Jefferson’s Liberty Coin shown above. Thomas Jefferson was a widower of 19 years when he became the President.
