2008 American Gold Eagle Coins

The 2008 American Gold Eagle Coins saw an explosion of interest for the bullion strikes, but high initial gold prices kept the proof and uncirculated Gold Eagle mintage down.

Sales of the bullion strikes started off relatively normal for the year despite the price of gold averaging between $846 and $1011 – at least $150 over what the precious metal averaged the previous year. However, as gold began to fall in the latter half of 2008, many turned to the bullion Eagles as a hedge against the uncertain economic times that appeared to be ahead for the world.

The Mint only released one special set during the year which contained any Gold Eagles. It was named the 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set and contained one 1/2 Ounce Uncirculated Gold Eagle along with a 1/2 Ounce Uncirculated Gold American Buffalo Coin.

2008 Gold Eagle Mintage

Bullion Gold Eagle Mintage

After starting off at relatively normal levels in the first part of the year, Bullion Eagle mintage sky-rocketed by August forcing the Mint to suspend sales for a few weeks and then bring them back online, but under an allocation program.

The chart below shows the total mintage of 2008-dated Bullion Gold Eagles:

One Ounce Bullion Gold Eagle 710,000
1/2 Ounce Bullion Gold Eagle 61,000
1/4 Ounce Bullion Gold Eagle 70,000
1/2 Ounce Bullion Gold Eagle 305,000

Proof Gold Eagle Mintage

Due to the high price of gold the first half of the year, the initial price on the Proof Gold Eagles apparently kept many from buying the collectible strikes. Once the price was adjusted later in the year, more sold, but not enough to prevent the 2008 total Proof Gold Eagle mintage from being the lowest annual mintage in history.

The chart below shows the total mintage of 2008-dated Proof Gold Eagles which includes the number sold as part of the Proof Gold Eagle 4-Coin Set (of which 12,517 were sold).

One Ounce Proof Gold Eagle 30,237
1/2 Ounce Proof Gold Eagle 22,602
1/4 Ounce Proof Gold Eagle 18,877
1/10 Ounce Proof Gold Eagle 28,116

Uncirculated Gold Eagle Mintage

Falling victim to the same fate as the Proof Gold Eagles, the Uncirculated Gold Eagle mintage was also at a historically low level for 2008. The Mint also included a 1/2 Ounce Uncirculated Gold Eagle in its special 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set which also came with a 1/2 Ounce Uncirculated Gold American Buffalo Coin.

The chart below shows the total mintage of 2008-dated Uncirculated Gold Eagles which includes the number sold as part of the Uncirculated Gold Eagle 4-Coin Set (of which 2,851 were sold) and the 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set (of which 7,622 were sold).

One Ounce Uncirculated Gold Eagle 11,908
1/2 Ounce Uncirculated Gold Eagle 15,682
1/4 Ounce Uncirculated Gold Eagle 11,883
1/10 Ounce Uncirculated Gold Eagle 12,657

Issue Information

The 2008 Gold Eagles marked the twenty-third year in which the US Mint produced coins under the Gold Eagle Program.

Release Date

The Gold Bullion Eagles were available from the Mint’s network of authorized purchasers at normal volumes during the first half of the year. However, intense demand in the latter half of 2008 led the Mint to suspend sales for a few weeks only to return them to availability under a special allocation program. Proof Gold Eagles went on sale March 4, 2008. Uncirculated Gold Eagles were available beginning April 1, 2008. The 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set was initially offered on August 1, 2008.

Issue Price

As normal, the Bullion Gold Eagles were available from the Mint’s network of authorized purchasers for a small premium above the current spot price of the gold contained within them.

The initial price of the Proof Gold Eagles was set at 1,199.95 for the One Ounce Proof, $609.95 for the 1/2 Ounce Proof, $329.95 for the 1/4 Ounce Proof and $149.95 for the 1/10 Ounce Proof. The Proof 4-Coin Gold Eagle Set was originally listed for $2199.95.

When first available, the US Mint charged $1119.95 for the One Ounce Uncirculated, $565.95 for the 1/2 Ounce Uncirculated, $295.95 for the 1/4 Ounce Uncirculated and $124.95 for the 1/10 Ounce Uncirculated. The initial price for the Uncirculated Gold Eagle 4-Coin Set was $2,039.95 and the 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set sold for $1228.88.
