Coins in the series are released at an approximate rate of four per year with the first strike ever issued being the Martha Washington First Spouse Gold Coin struck to honor the wife of the first President of the United States in 2007. Subsequent coins in the series were (and are) issued on approximately the same schedule as the circulating Presidential $1 Coins.
First Spouse Coins are each struck from 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold to either proof or uncirculated quality.
Additional 2008 First Spouse Gold Coins
Four different First Spouse Coins were issued in 2008 with each one being struck to either proof or uncirculated condition. The 2008 strikes were:
- 2008-W Elizabeth Monroe First Spouse Gold Coin
- 2008-W Louisa Adams First Spouse Gold Coin
- 2008-W Jackson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin
- 2008-W Van Buren’s First Spouse Gold Coin
As shown by the above Jackson and Van Buren coins, when a President served without a spouse, an image of the mythical figure of Liberty will be used on the Spouse Coins.
