Included in these sets are representatives of two programs authorized by the Presidential Coin Act of 2005 – in this case, an uncirculated James K. Polk Presidential $1 Coin and a bronze medal replica of the Sarah Polk First Spouse Gold Coin.

This set honors the 11th President of the United States who served from 1845-1849 and his wife.

Presidential Coin & Spouse Medal Sets

This set marks the twelfth of similar releases from the US Mint since their debut in 2007. Typically, only four are issued annually, but as John Tyler had two different wives while in office, a total of five Presidential $1 Coin and Medal Sets were released in 2009. The complete list of those honored in 2007, 2008 and 2009 is shown below.

  • 2007 – George Washington and Martha Washington
  • 2007 – John Adams and Abigail Adams
  • 2007 – Thomas Jefferson and Liberty
  • 2007 – James Madison and Dolley Madison
  • 2008 – James Monroe and Elizabeth Monroe
  • 2008 – John Quincy Adams and Louisa Adams
  • 2008 – Andrew Jackson and Liberty

  • 2009 – John Tyler and Julia Tyler

The authorizing legislation makes allowances for those Presidents who served without a spouse by dictating that an image of the mythical figure of Liberty be used on the Spouse Coins and Medals.
