When they first appeared, they marked the first bullion coin struck by the Mint from .9999 fine 24-karat gold. Authorized by the Presidential Coin Act of 2005, both the obverse (heads side) and reverse (tails side) designs are based on a popular U.S. circulating nickel which debuted in 1913 and earned the nickname of "Indian Head Nickel" or "Buffalo Nickel." The designs were the work of noted artist James Earle Fraser.

The Mint also produces proof quality coins of the same design and content for numismatic interests.
