The two programs represented are the Presidential $1 Coin series and the First Spouse Gold Coin Series. For the Presidential series, an uncirculated James Buchanan Presidential $1 Coin is included. Representing the First Spouse series, a bronze medal likeness of Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin is included.

As Buchanan served as President of the United States without a spouse, the spouse medal representing his term shows an image of the mythical figure of Liberty on the obverse of the coin. Had he been married during his time in office, an image of his wife would appear on the coin and medal.

Previous Presidential Coin & Spouse Medal Sets

As the sixteenth offering of this series from the US Mint, the Buchanan Coin and Medal Set was preceded by:

  • 2007 – George Washington and Martha Washington
  • 2007 – John Adams and Abigail Adams
  • 2007 – Thomas Jefferson and Liberty
  • 2007 – James Madison and Dolley Madison
  • 2008 – James Monroe and Elizabeth Monroe
  • 2008 – John Quincy Adams and Louisa Adams
  • 2008 – Andrew Jackson and Liberty
  • 2008 – Martin Van Buren and Liberty
  • 2009 – William Henry Harrison and Anna Harrison
  • 2009 – John Tyler and Letitia Tyler
  • 2009 – John Tyler and Julia Tyler
  • 2009 – James K. Polk and Sarah Polk
  • 2009 – Zachary Taylor and Margaret Taylor
  • 2010 – Millard Fillmore and Abigail Fillmore
  • 2010 – Franklin Pierce and Jane Pierce

If a president had more than one spouse while in office, the authorizing legislation dictates that both will be represented on different coins. If the president had no spouse (as is the case with James Buchanan), the mythical figure of Liberty will be used.

Designer & Sculptor / Engraver

Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the portrait of James Buchanan found on the obverse (heads side) of the uncirculated coin. The reverse (tails side) of all of the Presidential coins was designed by Don Everhart to show an image of the Statue of Liberty.

The image of Liberty shown on the obverse of the medal was originally designed by Christian Gobrecht for the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle which appeared from 1840-1907. The reverse shows a young Buchanan working as a bookkeeper at the family store. It was designed by Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer David Westwood and sculpted by Joseph Menna.
