It is interesting to know that the Kennedy Half-Dollar replaced the previous Franklin Half-Dollar within a few mere months after John F. Kennedy was assassinated. In fact, its introduction cut the previous Franklin program short by at least nine years before it would have officially been ready for a design change.
With demand for the Half-Dollars at negligible levels, the US Mint only strikes the circulation quality coins for collectors and makes them available for purchase directly from the Mint in either these Two-Roll Sets or in 200-Coin Bags.
Previous Half-Dollar Coins
For almost two centuries in the history of the United States, the Half-Dollar denominated coin played an integral role in everyday commerce. Through that time, several incarnations of the piece have been created:
- Flowing Hair Half-Dollar (1794-1995) – designed by Robert Scot
- Draped Bust Half-Dollar ((1796-1807) – designed by Robert Scot
- Capped Bust, Lettered Edge (1807-1836) – designed by John Reich
- Capped Bust, Reeded Edge (1836-1839) – designed by Christian Gobrecht
- Liberty Seated (1839-1891) – designed by Christian Gobrecht
- Barber or Liberty Head (1892-1915) – designed by Charles E. Barber
- Liberty Walking (1916-1947) – designed by Adolph A. Weinman
- Franklin (1948-1963) – designed by John R. Sinnock
