These gold coins were authorized along with the circulating Presidential $1 Coins meant to honor the former Presidents of the United States. As companion pieces, the Spouse Coins are issued on approximately the same schedule as the Presidential Coins they are associated with.

Both the obverse and reverse of the spouse coins honor the individual. The obverse shows a portrait while the reverse depicts a scene emblematic of that spouse’s life and work.

Previous First Spouse Gold Coins

The First Spouse Gold Coin series debuted in 2007 with the US Mint issuing thirteen coins previous to this Abigail Fillmore strike. Previously honored individuals and the year they were showcased are:

  • 2007 – Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison
  • 2008 – Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Jackson’s Liberty and Van Buren’s Liberty
  • 2009 – Anna Harrison, Letitia Tyler, Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk and Margaret Taylor

As shown by the Letitia Tyler and Julia Tyler strikes, if the serving President had more than one spouse associated with him, both will be featured on separate coins. The Liberty coins represent Presidents who served without a spouse. In this instance, a version of the mythical figure Liberty is used.

Issue Information

Each coin of this series is struck from one half ounce of .9999 fine gold and features a legal tender face value of $10.
