These coins were authorized along with circulating dollar coins that honor the former Presidents themselves. Both were included in the Presidential Coin Act of 2005, and both are slated for a release schedule almost identical to each-other. When the Presidential $1 Coin is released, the spouse coin affiliated with it will be released shortly thereafter.
Each coin is struck from 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold with a portrait of the spouse on the obverse (heads side) and an image emblematic of their life or work on the reverse.
Previous First Spouse Gold Coins
Fourteen coins have preceded this First Spouse strike since the program’s launch in 2007. These coins are:
- 2007 – Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison
- 2008 – Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Jackson’s Liberty and Van Buren’s Liberty
- 2009 – Anna Harrison, Letitia Tyler, Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk and Margaret Taylor
- 2010 – Abigail Fillmore
As shown on the above list, if the President served without a spouse, an image of the mythical figure Liberty will be used. When the President had two spouses during his tenure, both will be shown on separate coins (as seen on the Letitia Tyler and Julia Tyler coins).
Issue Information
Each coin in the series is struck from 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold with a legal tender face value of $10. Obviously, the face value is much less than the coin’s intrinsic value.
Release Date
June 3, 2010 is marked as the release date for the Jane Pierce First Spouse Gold Proof Coin from the US Mint.
Issue Price
The issue price for First Spouse coins is dictated by the US Mint’s precious metal coin pricing matrix which ties the price of the coins to the average of the previous week’s London Fix for gold.
U.S. Mint Production Facility
A "W" mintmark on the design indicates that each coin was struck at the US Mint’s facility in West Point.
Designer & Sculptor
Donna Weaver designed the portrait of Jane Pierce found on the obverse (heads side) of the coin. It was sculpted by Don Everhart.
Weaver also designed the image on the reverse (tails side) of the coin to show. It shows Mrs. Pierce sitting in the visitor’s gallery of the Old Senate Chamber in the U.S. Capitol Building during a debate. It was sculpted by Charles Vickers.
