Each coin in the series is struck from 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold and features a face value of $10. Of course, the coin’s intrinsic value far outweighs its legal tender value.
The obverse (heads side) and reverse (tails side) both honor the spouse with the obverse showing a portrait of the individual. The reverse shows that individual engaged in an activity they were known for during their time.
Previous First Spouse Gold Coins
There have been fourteen coins which have proceeded the Mrs. Pierce strike. Those individuals honored and the year of release are:
- 2007 – Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison
- 2008 – Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Jackson’s Liberty and Van Buren’s Liberty
- 2009 – Anna Harrison, Letitia Tyler, Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk and Margaret Taylor
- 2010 – Abigail Fillmore
When a president had two spouses associated with them during their tenure, both spouses will be represented on separate coins. The example of this are the 2009 Julia and Letitia Tyler coins. If the president had no spouse while in office (like Martin Van Buren), then an image of the mythical figure Liberty will be used.
