It is likely that the Mary Lincoln Spouse Coin will prove to be one of the most popular coins in the series – owing mostly to the history surrounding her husband, President Abraham Lincoln. It was his solemn task to lead the country through the turbulent American Civil War only to be assassinated within days of its end.
Each coin in the series is struck from 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold and features a face value of $10.
Previous First Spouse Gold Coins
Sixteen coins have preceded the Lincoln Spouse Coin in the series. Listed in their correct order, those coins are:
- 2007 – Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison
- 2008 – Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Jackson’s Liberty and Van Buren’s Liberty
- 2009 – Anna Harrison, Letitia Tyler, Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk and Margaret Taylor
- 2010 – Abigail Fillmore, Jane Pierce, Buchanan’s Liberty
Under the terms of the series, if a President served without a spouse, an image of the mythical figure of Liberty will be used instead. If the President had more than one spouse during his term, both will be honored on different coins.
