However, making these coins even more unique is the fact that beginning in 2009, the US Mint started a six-year series of unique reverse designs which are to be emblematic of the six principles found in the preamble of the United States Constitution. As such, the 2010 strike marks the second year for the new program.
Each one ounce platinum proof coin is struck from 99.95% platinum to a diameter of 1.287 inches.
Complete Principles of the Preamble Series
Beginning in 2009, the US Mint started dedicating the reverse (tails side) of the Platinum Proof Coin to the six principles found in the preamble of the US Constitution. Those six principles and the year they will be shown are given below:
- 2009-W To Form a More Perfect Union
- 2010-W To Establish Justice
- 2011-W To Insure Domestic Tranquility
- 2012-W To Provide for the Common Defence
- 2013-W To Promote the General Welfare
- 2014-W To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity
These six themes will be found on the reverse of the Platinum Proof Coins with an image emblematic of the Statue of Liberty found on the reverse.
