William Cousins modified John Flanagan’s original portrait of George Washington for the obverse of all of the America the Beautiful Quarters. Flanagan’s original work was first used on a quarter dollar in 1932.

Showing imagery iconic of Yellowstone National Park, the reverse design of the coin depicts Old Faithful Geyser along with two American Bison (Buffalo). Landscape consistent with Yellowstone is shown in the background. The design and sculpture for the coin was done by Don Everhart.
