Originally authorized as part of the Presidential Coin Act of 2005 along with several other series of coins, these strikes marked the first bullion coins produced by the Mint from one ounce of .9999 fine 24-karat gold. The Mint also produces proof quality versions of this same coin for numismatic purposes.
Adding to the coin’s collectability aside from its obvious intrinsic value is the fact that the design used on the coin is a re-creation of one of the most popular designs ever produced by the Mint – the 1913 circulating nickel which earned the nickname of "Indian Head Nickel" or "Buffalo Nickel." The designs were the work of noted artist James Earle Fraser.
