After graduating from college (the first future First Lady to do so), Lucy married Rutherford B. Hayes in 1852. Rutherford was nine years her senior at the time of their marriage and already practicing law, but that did not prevent their union.

Lucy supported her husband’s political ambitions and helped to get him elected as the 19th President of the United States. While First Lady, Lucy promoted temperance and is reported to only have allowed alcohol during one state function of the White House. Lucy is also credited with instituting the Easter Egg Roll on the grounds of the White House, a tradition still continued today.

Previous First Spouse Gold Coins

Nineteen coins have preceded the Hayes First Spouse Gold Coin. They are shown below:

  • 2007 – Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison
  • 2008 – Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Jackson’s Liberty and Van Buren’s Liberty
  • 2009 – Anna Harrison, Letitia Tyler, Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk and Margaret Taylor
  • 2010 – Abigail Fillmore, Jane Pierce, Buchanan’s Liberty, Mary Todd Lincoln
  • 2011 – Eliza Johnson, Julia Grant

If a President served without a spouse, an image of the mythical figure of Liberty will be used on the coins instead. If the President was married to more than one person while in office, both will be shown on separate coins.
