Lucy married Rutherford B. Hayes in 1852 after she graduated from college (she would become the first First Lady to have been a college graduate). Rutherford was already practicing law at the time of their nuptials and nine years her senior.

After serving on the Union side during the American Civil War, Rutherford’s focus turned to politics which Lucy helped support. Then in 1877, Hayes became President of the United States making Lucy the First Lady. While serving as the official hostess of the White House, Lucy only allowed alcohol at one state function leading some detractors to label her "Lemonade Lucy."

Previous First Spouse Gold Coins

The US Mint will have issued nineteen Spouse Coins before the release of the Lucy Hayes strike. Those nineteen coins are shown below:

  • 2007 – Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison
  • 2008 – Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Jackson’s Liberty and Van Buren’s Liberty
  • 2009 – Anna Harrison, Letitia Tyler, Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk and Margaret Taylor
  • 2010 – Abigail Fillmore, Jane Pierce, Buchanan’s Liberty, Mary Todd Lincoln
  • 2011 – Eliza Johnson, Julia Grant

An image of the mythical figure of Liberty will be used on the Spouse Coins if the President was not married during his time in office. If they were married to more than one person during their administration (such as John Tyler), then both will be featured on separate coins.

Issue Information

The US Mint strikes each First Spouse Coin from 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold.

Issue Price

A pricing matrix is used to calculate the issue price for the First Spouse Gold Coins. It ties that price to the average of the previous week’s London Gold Fix.

U.S. Mint Production Facility

The US Mint facility in West Point strikes all of the First Spouse Gold Coins. As such, the ‘W’ mintmark is present on each coin.

Designer & Sculptor

Shown on the obverse of the coin is a portrait of former First Lady Hayes as designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Master Designer Susan Gamble and sculpted by Don Everhart.

AIP Associate Designer Barbara Fox designed the reverse to show Lucy Hayes participating in the first Easter Egg Roll on the White House Lawn. It was sculpted by Joseph Menna.
