That design is actually created originally for an associated series of quarter dollars known as the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. Like those quarters, the obverse of each strike in the five ounce silver series contains the same portrait of George Washington as designed by John Flanagan originally for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar.

This series of silver uncirculated coins is actually released by the US Mint as the numismatic versions of yet another series of coins known as the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ Program. Congress authorized the bullion coins along with the related quarter dollars as part of the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008. The five ounce uncirculated coins were created under the authority granted the Secretary of the Treasury.

Designer & Sculptor

John Flanagan designed the obverse portrait of George Washington as featured on all coins of the America the Beautiful related series. It was originally used on the 1932 circulating quarter dollar and has appeared on quarters in one form or another ever since.

The reverse design for the Acadia Silver Uncirculated Coin is taken from the associated quarter dollars series. The US Mint describes that quarter design with:

"The reverse…depicts a view of the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and Acadia’s rough coastline.  Inscriptions are ACADIA, MAINE, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.  The reverse was designed by AIP Associate Designer Barbara Fox and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna."
