Included as part of the set will be a 2012-S Proof American Silver Eagle and a 2012-S Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle. Both of these coins are struck at the United States Mint’s facility in San Francisco. This differs from the standard 2012 Proof Silver Eagle which is struck at the US Mint’s facility in West Point.

The popularity of this release will likely be high if past special American Silver Eagle sets can be any indicator. The American Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary Set issued in 2011 completely sold out in just four and a half hours.

Set Mintage

Unlike past Silver Eagle Sets issued by the US Mint, a maximum mintage has not been established for the 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Set. Instead, the US Mint will offer the sets for sale for four weeks running from June 7, 2012 through July 5, 2012. All orders accepted during this period will be fulfilled by the US Mint.

The procedural change is likely in response to past issues with popular releases. For example, when the 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set debuted, collectors jammed the phone lines and even brought down the US Mint’s website as they attempted to insure their orders were accepted for the limited mintage set.

By offering this product for a four week window, there should be no need to worry about placing orders within the first few minutes. However, collectors may not show as much interest in the set as the perceived rarity is lower with no initial mintage cap in place.

A final mintage for the set will be announced by the US Mint after the close of sales.
