Coins of this series are struck by the US Mint as the numismatic versions of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ Program. The US Mint strikes both series from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches which was originally required by Congress for the bullion series.

Designs for the five ounce silver coins are taken from a third US Mint series – the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. This includes an obverse portrait of George Washington which has been featured on quarter dollars in one form or another since 1932 and reverse designs emblematic of selected sites of national interest from around the United States and its territories.
