2012 El Yunque National Forest Quarter Rolls

The 2012 El Yunque National Forest Quarter Rolls, if released by the US Mint, will include circulation quality strikes of the eleventh coin in the America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program.

Coins in the set honor El Yunque, a national forest which is located in the United States Territory of Puerto Rico. The protection of the forest began in 1876 while still under Spanish control. When Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States, the protections afforded the forest area remained making it one of the oldest natural preserves in the Western Hemisphere.

Each two-roll set will contain a total of eighty circulation quality quarters. Forty of those quarters will be struck at the US Mint’s facility in Philadelphia and forty will be struck at the US Mint’s facility in Denver. Both rolls will ship in special mint wrapping indicating its face value and contents.

2012 America the Beautiful Quarters

The US Mint is scheduled to release five America the Beautiful Quarters annually. Those slated for 2012 include:

  • 2012 El Yunque National Forest Quarter representing Puerto Rico
  • 2012 Chaco Culture National Historical Park Quarter representing New Mexico
  • 2012 Acadia National Park Quarter representing Maine
  • 2012 Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarter representing Hawaii
  • 2012 Denali National Park Quarter representing Alaska

100-coin bags containing circulation quality strikes may also be released by the US Mint along with these two-roll sets. The bags contain the buyers choice of quarters struck at the Denver Mint or the Philadelphia Mint.

Issue Information

The obverse of each strike contains the standard portrait of George Washington which is featured on each America the Beautiful Coin. The reverse highlights a portion of El Yunque National Forest.

Honored State or Territory

The US Territory of Puerto Rico is represented by these El Yunque Coins. Following the Spanish American War of 1898, the island was ceded to the United States from Spain.

Release Date

A release date for the El Yunque Quarter Two-Roll Sets has not been announced by the US Mint.

U.S. Mint Production Facility

Both facilities responsible for striking the circulation coinage of the United States are represented in this set. One roll contains strikes from the US Mint’s facility in Denver and one roll contains strikes from the US Mint’s facility in Philadelphia.

Designer & Sculptor / Engraver

George Washington, the first President of the United States is featured on the obverse (heads side) of each America the Beautiful Coin with a portrait designed by John Flanagan. Washington’s image has been found on the quarter dollar since 1932,

A portion of El Yunque National Forest will be featured on the reverse (tails side) of this coin.
