Struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver, the coins honor the national park located in Hawaii dedicated to the thermal features of the region. It was originally established in 1916 as the eleventh national park in the history of the United States.

Each strike will feature a reverse design showcasing a portion of the national park and an obverse with a portrait of the first President of the United States, George Washington. These design elements are identical as to what will be found on the circulating America the Beautiful Quarters®.

2012 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins

The US Mint will release a total of five America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins in 2012:

  • 2012 El Yunque National Forest 5 oz Silver Bullion Coin representing Puerto Rico
  • 2012 Chaco Culture National Historical Park 5 oz Silver Bullion Coin representing New Mexico
  • 2012 Acadia National Park 5 oz Silver Bullion Coin representing Maine
  • 2012 Hawaii Volcanoes National Park 5 oz Silver Bullion Coin representing Hawaii
  • 2012 Denali National Park 5 oz Silver Bullion Coin representing Alaska

The program calls for five coins to be released annually during the its run (2010-2021). The 2012 strikes mark the eleventh through the fifteenth for the program.

Issue Information

The America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins will be released on a schedule similar to the circulating America the Beautiful Quarter Dollar.

Release Date

The US Mint has not yet announced a release date for the Hawaii Volcanoes Silver Bullion Coin.

Issue Price

As a bullion coin, the US Mint will not sell the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion pieces directly to the public. Instead, it will use its network of authorized purchasers just as it does for its other bullion strikes. Price will be determined by the current spot price of the five ounces of silver contained within each piece, plus a small premium for minting and distribution costs.

U.S. Mint Production Facility

Although no minting facility has been officially announced, the Mint installed special equipment at its facility in Philadelphia for producing the America the Beautiful Bullion Coins. Also of note, bullion pieces do not typically have a mintmark.

Designer & Sculptor

Originally designed for the 1932 quarter dollar, the portrait of the first President of the United States will be found on the obverse (heads side) of all of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins as well as the related America the Beautiful Quarters. It was designed by John Flanagan.

Official design information for the reverse of the Hawaii Volcanoes Coin has not yet been released, but it will showcase a portion of the national park.
