This series of silver uncirculated coins are struck by the US Mint as the numismatic versions of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ Program. Both series feature composition of five ounces of .999 fine silver with diameters of three inches.

Both also contain similar imagery on both their obverse and reverse. The imagery was actually originally created for a third US Mint series – the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. Congress authorized those quarters along with the bullion coins as part of the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008. These five ounce uncirculated coins were created under the authority granted the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and sell items of numismatic interest.

The reverse design for the Hawaii Volcanoes Silver Uncirculated Coin is taken from the associated quarter dollars series. The US Mint describes that quarter design with:

"The reverse…depicts an eruption on the east rift of Kilauea Volcano.  Inscriptions are HAWAI’I VOLCANOES, HAWAII, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.  It was designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles L. Vickers."
