Authorizing Coin Law
U.S. Mint Online Site

The Frances Cleveland First Spouse Gold Coins are struck as part of the series which honors the former spouses of the Presidents of the United States. Typically, the spouses are only honored once in the series, but Frances Cleveland is a bit of an anomaly for the program.

She will actually be honored twice because her husband, Grover Cleveland, served two non-consecutive terms as President (22nd and 24th). Accordingly, the authorizing law for the series allows for Frances to be honored for both terms.

Previous First Spouse Gold Coins

The First Spouse Gold Coin Program debuted in 2007. Strikes appearing in previous years as part of the series include:

  • 2007 – Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison
  • 2008 – Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Jackson’s Liberty and Van Buren’s Liberty
  • 2009 – Anna Harrison, Letitia Tyler, Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk and Margaret Taylor
  • 2010 – Abigail Fillmore, Jane Pierce, Buchanan’s Liberty, Mary Todd Lincoln
  • 2011 – Eliza Johnson, Julia Grant, Lucy Hayes, Lucretia Garfield

Generally, four coins are issued per year in the series in association with a companion Presidential $1 Coin program.
