Authorizing Coin Law

Frances is the only individual to actually be featured on two different coins of the First Spouse series. This is because her husband served as President of the United States in two non-consecutive terms. Accordingly, the law which authorized the coins dictates that Frances be honored on one coin associated with her husband’s first term and one coin associated with her husband’s second term as President.

The first term coin is the second First Spouse Gold Coin issued in 2012 with this strike being the fourth and last for the year. Like all coins of the series, each is struck from 1/2 ounce of .9999 fine gold.

Previous First Spouse Gold Coins

Over twenty coins have been released in the First Spouse Gold Coin series since its debut in 2007. A list of previous releases is shown below:

  • 2007 – Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Jefferson’s Liberty and Dolley Madison
  • 2008 – Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, Jackson’s Liberty and Van Buren’s Liberty
  • 2009 – Anna Harrison, Letitia Tyler, Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk and Margaret Taylor
  • 2010 – Abigail Fillmore, Jane Pierce, Buchanan’s Liberty, Mary Todd Lincoln
  • 2011 – Eliza Johnson, Julia Grant, Lucy Hayes, Lucretia Garfield

Even if the associated President served more than one consecutive term, the spouse is only featured on one coin. Frances Cleveland appears on two coins because her husband, Grover, served non-consecutive terms.
