Each coin is struck from one ounce of the precious metal, although fractional sizes of the proof quality strike were issued in past years. In 2008, the US Mint also issued 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce Proof Gold Buffalo Coins in addition to uncirculated Buffalo Coins. Both the fractional proof and uncirculated versions would be short-lived, however, as the US Mint issued them just the one year.

Shown on each coin are designs first used by the US Mint on the 1913-1938 circulating nickel known commonly as either the "Indian Head Nickel" or the "Buffalo Nickel," these coins were originally designed by artist James Earle Fraser. Each proof coin features brilliant detail and a mirror-like background.
