Work on the massive sculpture in the Black Hills of South Dakota began in 1927 under the direction of Gutzon Borglum and continued (with periodic stops) until 1941. The memorial features the likenesses of four past Presidents of the United States – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, all selected for their roles in preserving and expanding the nation.
While these bullion coins will feature obverse and reverse designs identical to the circulating America the Beautiful Quarters® Program, their content, size and weight will be much different. Each will be struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches.
