Effigy was first declared a national monument in 1949 and protects three separate units in northeastern Iowa. Over 200 prehistoric mounds are preserved within the monument’s boundaries which were constructed by Native Americans long before European settlers first arrived. Thirty-one of the mounds are classified as effigies meaning they were built in the shape of mammals, birds or reptiles.

Each America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin is struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver. The US Mint edge inscribes each piece to show its weight and fineness.
