Ellis Island (found within site of the more famous Statue of Liberty) operated as a gateway to America for years. An immigration station on the island officially opened on 1892 and operated for several decades before closing down. During that time period, millions of immigrants came to America through Ellis. The island was eventually given over to the National Park Service who now operates a museum at the location.

The Ellis Island Quarter will be the thirty-ninth in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. A total of fifty-six new quarters will have been issued under the program by the time it is completed in 2021.
