Perhaps one the most noted African American’s of the nineteenth century was Frederick Douglass. A former slave, Douglass proved to be an outspoken proponent of equal rights for all, not only including African Americans, but also women. His oratory skills as well as his writing abilities lended well to his positions. His home in Washington, D.C., known as Cedar Hill, is preserved as this national historic site.

The Frederick Douglass Quarters represent the thirty-seventh of the American the Beautiful Quarters Program.

2017 America the Beautiful Quarters

The US Mint issues five America the Beautiful Quarters Program coins annually. Those scheduled for 2017 are:

  • 2017 Effigy Mounds America the Beautiful Quarter representing Iowa
  • 2017 Frederick Douglass America the Beautiful Quarter representing the District of Columbia
  • 2017 Ozark America the Beautiful Quarter representing Missouri
  • 2017 Ellis Island America the Beautiful Quarter representing New Jersey
  • 2017 George Rogers Clark America the Beautiful Quarter representing Indiana

All fifty states as well as the District of Columbia and the five territories of the United States are all honored by a different strike under the America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

Issue Information

100 circulation quality strikes from either the US Mint’s facility in Denver or the US Mint’s facility in Philadelphia will be included in each of these bags.

Designer & Sculptor / Engraver

The obverse (heads side) of all of the America the Beautiful coins contains a portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States. It was originally designed by John Flanagan for the circulating 1932 quarter dollar.

An image showcasing a portion of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site will be found on the reverse (tails side) of the quarter.
