Block Island is found in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 12 miles from mainland Rhode Island. The national wildlife refuge started off with a small transfer of land consisting of 28 acres from the Coast Guard. Today, the refuge consists of only 127 acres, but, owing in large part to the surrounding land owners, the refuge appears much larger. Over 70 species of migratory songbirds are said to stop on the island each year during their migration.

The Block Island Quarter is the forty-fifth for the America the Beautiful Program which debuted in 2010 and is scheduled to run until 2021.
