Each Preserve Coin honors a relatively small 10,894 acres of land located in Kansas established as the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in 1996. The Preserve itself recalls the not-so-distant past when the tallgrasses exemplified in the area once covered 140 million acres in North America. Today, almost all of those tallgrasses have been plowed under to allow for farming.

The US Mint will strike each Tallgrass Coin from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches. An edge inscription will be placed on each coin to signify its weight and fineness.
